Spyder Ski & Snowboard Jackets: A Complete Buyer's Guide to the Range
When it comes to performance ski outerwear, Spyder has a long and serious pedigree. Founded in 1978 in Boulder, Colorado, the brand built its reputation in competitive ski racing, pioneering speed suits and aerodynamic technologies that were eventually banned from competition for offering too great an advantage. That racing DNA runs through everything Spyder makes today, which is why the brand continues to be a strong choice for skiers and snowboarders who want genuine performance alongside the look.
At Sundance Ski & Snowboard, we carry a wide range of Spyder jackets. Here's a guide to the range and the technologies behind it, to help you find the right fit for your skiing.
Key Technologies in the Spyder Range
Spyder's EXO Technology
EXO is Spyder's own family of advanced materials developed specifically for winter outerwear. It covers two distinct areas of jacket performance.
EXO Shield
EXO Shield is Spyder's outer face fabric with an integrated waterproof membrane, engineered with multi-directional stretch so it moves with you on the mountain. It's available in ratings from 10K to 30K, with higher numbers indicating greater waterproofing and breathability performance for more demanding conditions.
EXO Thermo
EXO Thermo is Spyder's insulation and interior lining technology. It uses a heat-distributing hexagonal graphene print to regulate core body temperature, while also offering anti-static and anti-odour properties for extended days on the mountain.
Sorona
Sorona Aura is an insulation used across several Spyder's outerwear jackets. It's designed to provide shape, breathability, and warmth with less filling and less weight than traditional insulations, and it's tested for performance through the Common Thread Certification Program.
PrimaLoft
PrimaLoft is a premium synthetic insulation known for being lightweight, warm, and soft. Its ultra-fine fibres trap heat effectively and keep you thermally regulated across a range of conditions. It's packable, layers well, and while the fibres aren't technically waterproof, they're hydrophobic and dry quickly if they get wet.
Spyder uses several PrimaLoft variants across the range. PrimaLoft Bio uses 100% recycled, biodegradable synthetic fibre. PrimaLoft Gold Down Blend offers warmth comparable to 750-fill goose down. PrimaLoft Gold is a premium synthetic with a CLO value of 0.92, roughly equivalent to 500-fill-power down, achieving 98% thermal efficiency. PrimaLoft Silver Eco has a CLO value of 0.79, comparable to around 450-fill-power down. PrimaLoft Black Eco has a CLO value of 0.65, equivalent to approximately 350-fill-power down.
GORE-TEX
GORE-TEX is the industry benchmark for waterproof, windproof, and breathable outerwear membranes. Its extremely thin membrane blocks rain and wind while allowing sweat vapour to escape, keeping you dry and comfortable from both the outside in and the inside out.

Insulated vs. Shell: Which is Right for You?
Insulated Models
Insulated jackets have synthetic fill built into the jacket itself, trapping heat and reducing the need for heavy layering underneath. They're a good fit for resort skiing and for anyone who tends to feel the cold, as they provide all-in-one warmth without extra bulk.
Shell Models
Shell jackets are windproof and waterproof but have little or no internal insulation, so they're designed to be worn with layers underneath. This makes them more adaptable to changing conditions and better suited to high-output skiing, spring conditions, and backcountry use where you're generating heat and want to manage your temperature more actively.
Pairing Your Jacket With the Right Pants
Getting the right pants to go with your jacket is worth thinking about. The main factors to consider are waterproofing, insulation, breathability, and ventilation, depending on the conditions you ski in most. Fit is also important — slim, regular, and relaxed cuts all suit different riding styles and layering preferences.
We carry a range of Spyder pants at Sundance, including options with a baggy fit for those who prefer more room to move.
