Fitting Kids Ski Boots When the Child isn’t at the Store.

Fitting Kids Ski Boots When the Child isn’t at the Store.

Ideally you want to bring your young skier to the store so they can get their ski boots fitted properly in person. But sometimes life has other plans. In this post I’ll outline the best way to get your kid the best fit when they can’t make it to the store. I suggest this method to parents from out of town, busy multi sport families, and parents of kids who for health or disability reasons can’t attend the store in person.

Here’s our 5 steps to success:

Step 1 - Have the child put on their ski socks.

Step 2 - Take a full size piece of paper and have the child stand on the paper wearing their socks.

Step 3 - Trace both feet to give the most accurate outline of their foot in the sock. Do the best you can to make an exact picture of what the foot looks like in the ski socks. Length, width, and shape are all important for selecting the correct ski boots. It’s a good idea to write the kids name and the date on the paper.

Step 4 - Get a tape measure, and make the following 3 measurements: a) floor to chin b) floor to nose c) floor to top of their head. We will use measurements an and b to determine the correct ski length and measurement c is for setting up the bindings (will also need to know how much they weigh).

Step 5 - Bring the foot outlines and measurements to the store and the staff will use them to size the boots and skis. If you have the equipment they used last winter it’s helpful to bring it too.

When you’ve got all the new equipment setup and ready to go it’s a good idea to try on the boots before the first ski day. That way we can be sure our skier is going to be happy and if we need to make modifications (heat moulding etc) we can.
