How to Take Care of Your Merino Wool with Nikwax Wool Wash

by Emma Butterfield

One of the most sought out materials when it comes to base layers is merino wool(pronounced: mr·ee·now). For those who rely on merino wool garments for warmth, breathability, and odor resistance, proper maintenance is key to preserving their function. Enter Nikwax Wool Wash—a specialized cleaner designed to keep your garments fresh, soft, and high performing without compromising their natural benefits.

There’s a chance that right now you may be asking, “what is the difference between merino wool compared to regular wool?” and “why is merino wool so sought after?”.

Both merino wool and regular wool come from sheep, however there are some key differences in how they feel, perform, and are used. Merino wool comes from the merino sheep which are a species of sheep that are originally from Spain and were later exported to other European countries and then across the world, particularly to Australia and New Zealand. Merino sheep have a different coat compared to regular wool sheep, the wool fibers coming from a merino wool sheep are much finer and smoother, typically 12-24 microns in diameter which result in a soft, non-itch, and have a more comfortable feel directly against the skin. Regular wool on the other hand often comes from other breeds such as Romney or Suffolk sheep. The wool from these sheep result in thicker fibers which are around 30 microns or more in diameter which can lead to a coarse or itchy feeling on the skin. This wool is more often used in outerwear or rugs rather than base layers. Although merino wool is more ideal for any kind of garment that will be directly touching skin, it is more expensive due to its softness and performance qualities.

So why is merino wool so sought after? It’s because it combines the natural benefits of wool with a level of comfort and performance that synthetic materials struggle to match. Merino wool is very good at assisting the body's natural temperature regulation—as if it were on the merino sheep itself, merino wool keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm. It traps heat efficiently but also allows excess heat and moisture to escape. Merino wool will wick away moisture, and absorb sweat and release it into the air without feeling wet, helping your body stay dry and comfortable even during intense activity. Thanks to its natural antibacterial properties, merino wool resists odors far better than synthetic fabrics allowing you to be able to wear it for several days without it smelling, making it ideal for travel, backpacking, or activewear. Not only that but despite it being so thin and lightweight, merino wool is very insulating, keeping you warm without too much bulk. Its lightweight qualities even make it easy to pack! It’s a renewable, biodegradable & sustainable material making it a more environmentally conscious choice compared to synthetic fabrics derived from petroleum.

Now that we’ve learned all the amazing benefits about merino wool, we need to learn how to maintain it. The number one thing you need to maintain your merino wool garments is a wool specific wash. I personally like to use the Nikwax Wool Wash myself and that is the wash I will be talking about today. Nikwax Wool Wash is a specifically formulated cleaner designed for wool garments(e.g. Socks, baselayers, even underwear!). Unlike regular household detergents, Nikwax Wool Wash is a non-detergent-based, biodegradable cleaner that is free of harsh chemicals that can actually damage delicate wool fibers. Nikwax Wool Wash also refreshes by removing sweat and body oils, restores softness to your merino wool garments maintaining comfort against the skin, boosts the moisture wicking properties, and even reduces drying time so your garments are ready for reuse faster! In the previous paragraph, we learned how merino wool is naturally odor resistant, temperature-regulating, and breathable. However, these properties can break down over time if your merino garments are washed incorrectly. Using regular household detergents or fabric softeners can actually strip the natural lanolin in the wool which will reduce the softness and odor control properties. It will also leave residues that affect the breathability of the wool and even lead to pilling and/or shrinkage ruining the fit and feel of your merino wool garment. By contrast, Nikwax Wool Wash gently cleans while preserving all the qualities that make wool performance wear so valuable—especially for hiking, skiing, running, or everyday wear in variable conditions.

Washing is not the only crucial step in your maintenance routine! Drying your merino wool garments is also crucial to maintaining the shape, softness, and performance as well. Gently squeeze out the water, the best method is to press the garment between two towels to remove moisture—twisting and wringing will lead to stretching or distortion of the wool fibers. To avoid reshaping and stretching, lay your garment flat on a clean dry towel or mesh drying rack—this will help it reshape into its original form. Finally, make sure your garment is drying in a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators. The heat can weaken or shrink the fibers. Don’t forget to check the care label on your merino wool garments, some merino blends may have slightly different instructions.

Merino wool is a remarkable natural fiber. Its qualities make it ideal for both everyday wear and demanding outdoor activities. In order to keep these benefits intact, proper care is essential. By using a cleaner specifically designed for wool, you not only extend the life of your garments but also ensure they continue to perform at their best. Together, merino wool and Nikwax Wool Wash represent the perfect combination of comfort, performance, and responsible garment care.
